Case Study – Website Conversion

Although we’re not able to publicise the name of our client all of the details are real and can be corroborated by the client, if needed.

Our client had a major issue with their main website. It was built using code, by a web agency. The website looked good, great colour scheme and appropriate fonts. Unfortunately our client couldn’t make any changes to the site themselves, even to the point of simply adding a blog page. Furthermore they were paying large annual fees for ‘website maintenance’. These fees were explained to the client as industry standard fees for the type of website and support given.

The client came to us and their instruction was simple – get us out from underneath the agency – we want to convert our website over to our own hosting with a more user friendly ‘interface’.

The first thing we did was ask the agency to transfer ownership of the domain name from them to our client. As this was a .com site they have to issue a Domain Name Transfer. This involves them giving us a EPP code (which stands for Extensible Provisioning Protocol- obviously!).

Before we did any more we took a number of screen shots of the website and also, using standard WordPress functions, copied the pages and posts.

We could have copied over the entire database, images, posts, pages and plugins, but on reflection the customer decided they wanted some changes to the look and feel as well as some additions. The website would remain largely the same but with additional pages. The decision was then made to re-build the site using one of the most popular page builders called ‘Elementor’.

Using the original plan for the website we rebuilt the complete website, with additional pages and existing content in under two days. This included bringing over the complete content with some additional pages and posts.

You may be asking the question ‘so what?’ You’ve got an identical website with the same content, colour scheme and fonts. What was the point? Simply put, the client is now in control of their own website. They can make changes as they want. They can change the colour scheme and in fact the entire look and feel of the site and they can either do it themselves, with absolutely minimal training or they can farm the changes out, but they are not locked into one agency.

Additionally this customer is now saving in the region of £4000.00 per year.
